TORREVIEJA.COM CELEBRATES THE SPANISH FOOLS DAY - DÍA DE LOS INOCENTES - DISCOVERING A LOST SHIP
Discovering on the Torrevieja bay of a ship from the XVII century loaded of silver
The archaeological discovery took place last 22nd of December during the works of building the new marina at the harbour.
After the expert’s report made by specialists in underwater archaeology, more than 450 kilograms of silver have been found and recovered.
The local authorities have described the discovery of a ship from the XVII century in the Torrevieja sea harbour, as extraordinary. The ship itself is 22 metres long and it is supposed to have been sunk after an attack from Berbers pirates. The ship would have stayed hidden unless the works of building the new marina had been carried out. The workings of recovery, which began just a few days ago, have had to be interrupted due to the celebration of Christmas.
So far more than 450 kilograms of silver have been extracted, as well as some tools from that period. The ship is believed to be fully recovered in about two year’s time. At the present time, an exhibition in the future Museum of the Salt and the Sea is planned.
I wouldn't call 450kg "loaded of silver." That's just over a half ton. The Atocha had 20 tons. The ship "will be recovered in two years time"? Philipe Castro must be excavating this one!
