More than likely this is a hunting round for a handgun. Pretty common.

Another possibility is it came from a .50 caliber sabot round (containing a .45 caliber bullet) used in modern muzzleloaders.

GpSnoopy is dead on. Likely dropped as no deformation from impact. But little doubt that it is a Muzzleloading projectile meant to be fired with a sabot.

This is a more probable answer. Didn't even think about sabots.

It is a sabot, but that type is called a ballistic tip. Penetrates beeper that a hollow point before it expands. Excellant hunting bullet Tony
