I am pretty sure this is a .44 Henry Rimfire shell. Anyone out there know what time frame this is from? The area I found it goes back to at least the 1800s, possibly earlier.

That's what it looks like to me. Made by Winchester, note All Winchester rimfire products are headstamped with “H” in honor of Benjamin Tyler Henry. What I'm finding is it was made up till the 1934.

I'm assuming Wichester starting making ammo around 1866, which is when they started making the Winchester model 1866 which was an improved version of the Henry Model 1860. The headstamp style is what will narrow the date down.

Is the H embossed or stamped?

I see what looks like a firing pin strike on the right side at about the 4 o'clock position. Is there another firing pin strike on the other side? If not it might have been shot from a pistol versus rifle.

Also don't take this to the bank but what I'm seeing so far is Winchester changed from the raised H to a depressed H headstamp in the 1880's. IF these dates are correct, it will date from the 1860's-1880's.

Good measurements of the case, would help confirm if it's a 44 Henry.

Round firing pin. Only 1 strike. Thanks!

Colt was one oblong square firing pin. Could be a ballard rifle or ?
Thanks! I've been searching for single round firing pin .44 rimfire and haven't got anywhere. It's gonna be someone who has one or has seen one to figure that out I think, unless there is a magical web page that is hiding from me

Nice collection Pete! Looks like you have a number of single round pin marks! Glad to know I'm not the only one that saves old ammo.
