40mm GIANT U.M.C. shell case

Found in Sussex Co. Delaware 5" deep Garrett 250. Looks like a big ass shotgun shell. Has paper debris on inside. Measures 40mm or 1 5/8". Case is 29mm or 1 1/8" tall. Thanks, i know you can id this for me!

Could be an old shell casing for a commercial duck hunters gun. They used large big a$$ shotguns to kill as many birds they could with one shot.

That is a GREAT find! It is the largest that I have seen found. The largest that I personally have is a 4ga. Tamrock might be correct that it is for a punt gun, but I have a feeling that it was for a yacht cannon or signal cannon instead. 4ga was the largest size of "regular" shells that was listed in the vast majority of their catalogs, where the yacht cannon shells went much larger.
