$40 shipping??

The insurance is included with this coin. That is why it is so high. I have seen people charge outrageous shipping cost to send out 1 coin. I like to be a wise ass and ask if they are going to hand deliver it for that cost. Then I just don't bid unless the coin is still worth what I am paying including the shipping.

I see a lot of this type of thing, They believe a high shipping cost will make people think the coin is worth something like they are asking.
Most of the time it's not.

Hey RQ,

That's not why they charge sky high shipping. They figure someone will just look at the price, and not notice the shipping price. Most times it equals out to about the same as normal price plus normal shipping.

Very true. I was looking at coins yesterday and saw a decent deal on one, then noticed the shipping was $15 for a $5 coin. :o :o

Ebay pulled one of my auctions once because I was charging "too much shipping". Wish they'd crack down on some of there other people too..jeesh.

A couple of reasons people charge huge shipping fees on e-bay is because if you pay through paypal you can dispute the money you paid for the item and get a refund, but shipping is not disputable. Also, it is a way to get out of paying e-bay fees. E-bay charges a listing fee depending on your start price, and a final value fee depending on the price it sells for. If you list an item for $1 and charge $99 shipping and handling you are only charged for $1. It is also against their rules, so when I see someone doing that I report it. A lot of Chinese sellers do this. I've seen them sell a cheap knock off "antique" sword for $20, and charge $80 S&H. Of course by the time you get it and realize it's junk you can get you $20 back, but are out $80 S&H.

If I recall correctly, Ebay charges a fee for the purchase price and not on the S&H. I suspect this is a way around their fee.

I've bought coins and been charged up to $5, which I don't mind anything above $5 IMHO is too much (unless your talking EXTREMELY valuable coins.

I don't think there is anything wrong with charging a little extra for shipping. I live in a small town and sometimes it can take my whole lunch break waiting in line to ship out an insured package. I try to ship as much as possible from home with stamps. If I sell a coin on Ebay and it is worth $20-$30, I will put a $1.50-$2 shipping charge. It will cost me around .90 cents out of pocket with stamps and a bubble envelope. I ship everything in bubble envelopes.

If you ship printing online postage through paypal, for something you sold through ebay, you can get up to $500 insurance online through usps. Even without buying insurance delivery confirmation is free when you pay this way. I do this all the time on my jewelry items, and save a ton of time instead of waiting in post office lines.

I do some selling on E-bay also, and add a couple bucks for shipping to cover mailing supplies ect. But theres a huge difference between adding $2 or $3, and charging $40- $80 for shipping when actual postage is under $10.

I highly recommend shipping via USPS through paypal also. You pay directly through your paypal acct, print the label out on you printer, and glue it too your package. No waiting, no special trip anywhere. The mail man picks up the package at your mail box, and if you need shipping boxes, you can request them on line and they deliver them with the mail for free. The only way to go :)
