4 more hours at 1723 house - need help to ID possible military button

I spent another 4 hours at the 1723 house this past Saturday. Another merc and various other relics.

One button cleaned up really nicely, it is silver plated. It has an eagle and shield and 13 stars. A bit of google searching and I found dug copper ones that say they are militia or regiment uniform buttons from the Civil War. However, I didn't find any with the silver plate.

Can anyone confirm that this is from the Civil war? Older? Newer?

I found three examples in the Alberts book that match yours but not with that back mark. The examples were all Revolutionary war era. Awesome find.

Wow, rev war era aye? That would be pretty sweet. The site dates back that far! I think I'll post in the what is it section to see what peeps can come up with. It's definately military though no?

Great Finds! That's a early 1800's militia button, used around the war of 1812 i believe. It's a great find. HH

Thanks all for the responses. I also posted the button in the what is it forum. Feedback was that it dates to the 1820's, and is a state militia button, NE in origin, which makes sense as it was found in CT. Exact state is not known.

Thanks for the compliment, I agree, hi def pics are worth the effort. I have an old Kodak digital camera that does really nice Macro shots. (I use it over a newer model Canon) I've also been using it for quite a while so I have a pretty decent system in place. Usually I will take two shots of each "sequence" and take the best of the two.

It's a 6MP camera, so the files are well over 2MB's each. Next step is to crop it down as close as possible to the item in the picture. Most times that still leaves the file too big to post on any forums.

Last step is to reduce the size, I reduce to "Document Large (1024 X 768 px)". Both of these steps are offered in Microsoft Office Picture Manager, a small piece of editing software that comes with Microsoft office. It's quick and has great results. After reducing the size to the Doc Large setting, all files come in under 300kb's which will allow you to post to every forum I've ever been too.

I used to spend so much time trying to get it as close to the max file size as possible, but this is quick and gets good results.

HI Jaychim; Nice Button -----

I believe it is an 1812 Senior Enlisted Mans Button. The Star Pattern on the Recerse is the most telling sign ok. Also, On Civil War buttons the Shield was usually located in the Center of the Eagles Chest. I also believe that is a Heraldic Eagle ok. You may be able to trace back the Makers name and thus date it more accurately ok. Nice Find. PEACE:RONB
