Looks like a four hole Utility / Advertisement button mostly from "shoddy", a second grade suit material.. The link says Late 19th - early 20th century, but according to MJs cool link may be earlier.

Scroll down to see some similar and read about them. http://silversimon.piczo.com/?g=39870591&vsrc=search_google&cr=2

A good friend of mine has taken to the study of the Manufacturers marked on four holed buttons from the mid 19 th Century and it is really interesting!!!

I have to say, the Silversimon site's dating of this type of button to "late-1800s/early-1900s" does not go back in time far enough. It is known for certain that large quantities of these maker-marked 4-hole brass buttons were manufactured in the mid-1800s, because we civil war relic diggers find lots of them (deep down in civil war camp hutsites, and deep in battle-trenches), marked with the names of companies which were only in business in the 1850s/1860s. (I'm posting this as confirmation of what Kuger said in his post.)

Good to know. I suspected these 4 holed buttons were older. I wonder what this patent is for? http://www.google.com/patents/US151...7qPJ8TVtgfNk5DqCg#v=onepage&q=1518717&f=false

different design...the ones CBG and I are talking about date to the 1850's
Yea I know. I was trying to figure out what is different on the patented button. I think its the rim.

I couldnt tell either Big Cy,all I know is ours date much earlier even though they look the same
