Yesterday, I took "Ohio" (Chuck) to one of my new sites in Butler County, Ohio. This is after about 4 hours of walking the fields. The pestle was actually found along a small creek in the back of the property, but everything else was found in the washed out fields. Unfortunately, I didn't get an in-situ of the pestle (I wasn't convinced it was one until I showed it to Chuck).

Here's a nice in-situ:

Here's the point after being removed:

Chuck had a sharp eye when he spotted this one:

Here's a group shot of all of our finds at the end of the day.

Is that pestle called a 'bell pestle'? That's a really neat find, Au-seeker, as well as the other artifacts! :icon_thumright:

Love that pestle. I have a stone with a depression for one of those, but nothing to rest in it for display. That is just really cool, I like that. Thats the kind of everyday village life sort of artifact I love to see. Scrapers and points are neat but sort of a throwaway for the Natives Id wager. Easily broken and used hard so they break a lot, if you cant resharpen it then it is discarded. A pestle is something youd truly miss if you lost it or it fell overboard out of your dugout. What if some guy felt around the creekbottom for hours looking for it before giving up? It would be well cared for and used all day everyday. Imagine how long the last person to use it held it for, 4hrs? 5? Points are beautiful but a pestle is awesome, to me at least.

Bet it took a while to beat a pestle out of a core. It would have to be done just right and mustve been smooth when new or it would hurt to use it right?

Nice finds Is that a spade or an axe?

It does not have the polish that one would expect with a spade or hoe. I would think it is just a large chopper or hand axe.

Looks like a good day of hunting there fellows, nice pics and finds. The sidenotch in-situ is a killer shot and the pestle is a beauty.
