3k in halves = Lots of SILVER

Picked up my 3 1,000.00 bags and scored 150 40% and 16 90% Two of the 90%s were bens and one was a 1917 walker with a hole in the top. Also a 1980 silver proof with a D mint mark. Whats with that? I though all silver proofs were S.
Last weeks 3k was 11 90% and 56 40% if i remember right.

Great score, congrats. The 1980 is probably chrome plated. I have found a few like that. It would be an S mint if proof.

Fantastic score! :icon_thumleft:

Your 1980D is not a silver proof, or even a clad proof for that matter. After 1970, the next silver proof wasn't minted until 1992 other than a 40% bicentennial. Also, all proofs minted after 1967 have the "S" mintmark.

I'm guessing you found a clad half that has been plated with something to make it appear "prooflike" and silver.

Now those are some great bags!
The others are probably right, plated 1980. I've even found chrome-plated silver coins, including dimes.

man, I hope I get a call about bags soon. Do you do bags off of the machines?

They tell me they get the bags from the fed weighed out in 1,000.00 bags they then recount them and rebag them for me. It cost me 1 dollar a bag instead of getting 6 boxes of rolls.

very nice

what bank gives bags?
Some banks that have coin counting machines will sell full bags from the machines. It pays to be really nice and to bring the tellers treats, as that can open channels that are normally closed.

The 1980-D is not silver and not a proof.. I got something similar in my last box. Here is a picture of the one I got. If it was 1992 or later with an S mintmark, it would still be very easy to distinguish from an unaltered silver proof.

I was just saying that the Chrome plated halves are much different than silver, in look and feel... and IF presented with a chrome plated half, dated between 1992-2011, and with an S-mintmark it would be very easy to differentiate between that and an actual unaltered silver proof..

You can tell a chromed one 10 feet away while edge searching.
