After figuring out that one large lead thing I'd found was the lead base to a CW-era Hotchkiss canister shot, I went back to the same location two nights ago after work.
Found the large lead thing on the left which weighs 340g. The Hotckiss base on the right weighs 332g.

Also can't find any writing on this and, with the straight edge on one side, makes me think it's something else but I have no idea what. (Though the straight side of it kind of looks like a mold.)

First can I say what I wonderful find!!!! I am soooo green with envy!!!!

The other lead chunck is probably just a frag.

If I PM you my email would you send me some photos of the Hotch base for my files???

Just a random lead fragment or a fragment of a shell of some sort? Were any artillery shells made from lead?

There's another image over in "What's it Worth?" at http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,162608.0.html (with no replies yet) but I have a larger version of that pic over there. I'll have to take any other pics. Only have those two images at the moment.

My first thought was "camp lead". Looks like somebody slipped and poured hot lead all over their bullet mold.

Is there rust inside it on the flat area? I'd go back and start digging iron signals. You may find the remains of what it was poured over...

The photo is WONDERFUL...... I will post it in another CW forum that I am apart of and will get some ideas of price for you. This forum is a closed forum and I had to be invited otherwise I would let the link fly here.

I would guess that it is a piece of lead "sabot" off of a hotchkis round. Those are great finds...d2

I agree with the gentleman above. It is from a Hotchkiss shell. They are fairly distinctive when they blow off the shell. I once found an artillary practice range. We got four complete shells and a lot of fragments like yours. I consider them a good find. Keep looking around that area, there could be a complete shell there. Try a larger loop also. Some of those shells can get deep. Good luck.

According to my Civil War contact the piece you have would go for around $80-$100 on the high end. To be specific this is a Sabot for a 3" hotchkiss as written on the piece. These are early war being from 1862 and forward. The one referenced above for $195 has to be for one in better condition, I did look at the link!!!!

Let me know if you would like to sell!!!

sabot was on the back out area of the shell --the soft lead provided a good gas seal-- You don't want hard steel on steel contact shell to cannon barrel thus the sabot covering on the shell
