I'm looking for a little help. Any information that can be provided on this button would be great. What period? Thoughts on the detail/design? I believe it is copper with a silver plate (mostly flaked off now, but there is still some shine), approx. 32mm. My 3 year old son and I go on "treasure hunts" in the yard mostly. We have an old homestead on our property that burnt down in a wild fire in 1947, so I'm hopeful we will find other items, but his our first big find. I'd love to be able to put it away for him with a little note providing some back ground. An thoughts?

A clear close up of the back (laying flat) will help a lot.

1770s-90s, something in there. That is a nice one! Would definitely be one of my favorites had I dug it, and it would make the display case. :) It's a good find, but a better sign to hunt hard and try and find a site... or at least a few more targets from that era.

On the note I'd say something like "Colonial: Late 18th Century designed silver plate over copper button for civilian use" ...and of course the location.

IP know 10x's more about buttons than I do, sometimes the way (from what I've read from others) the shank was attached helps with dating.

One of the nicest dandy buttons I have seen dug. Very nice pattern and silvering!
