here are pictures of 3 things i dug this past week end
any ideas as to what they are
picture 1 solved cattle tag early 1900's
2010.03.28-DSCF4146.JPG
some kind of tag i think
its about 4 inches long and has the following letters/numbers
77690 chatua county Alb pat. U.S.B.A.I.

next
2010.03.28-DSCF4147.JPG2010.03.28-DSCF4149.JPG solved (ink well cover)
there are no threads on this any where

last is this thing
2010.03.28-DSCF4150.JPG
if it was not for the small hole at the top i would figure it was part of some kind of lid
the hole makes it look like it was suppose to have a ring or wire running throught it

There was a square item posted a few years back with the same flower shaped center but I cant find it. One of the guesses was a cover to an ink well.

i know that the picture shows what looks like a number but it is nothing more then an imperfection it the metal

For starters a pic of the back or maybe a top view. It looks as if its flat but my guess is its round but cant tell by the pic.. :-\

Top, bottom and side view should better help visualize the 3 dimensions.

I want to see the bottom of item #3. I think I have an ID for you. Judging from the bubbling in the metal on it, I think it was a pewter military whistle that was for some reason intentionally or unintentionally partially burned by fire (which is a shame). The shape of the bottom does not suggest that it was originally made in the shape that it is now.

But the loop part, top half of the item, and size of the item are consistent with that ID. And keep in mind that pewter has a Very Low melting point. It might have fallen off a chain from around someone's neck our out of their pocket near a campfire or onto a hot stove and been quickly melted by the heat, rendered unusable, and discarded. And of course, it could've been intentionally melted too.

Best Wishes,

Buckles
