Re: 3 "What is it"

... a .40-65 was made for both winchester, sharps and remington... by the United Metallic Catridge Company. I have no idea about dates...

... is a music reed... well... a single reed board with the reed... prolly from a wind instument. No telling the date.

Re: 3 "What is it"

The 40-65 Winchester cartridge was introduced in 1887 for the Model 1886 Winchester rifle. The Winchester single shot rifle was also chambered for it,and so was the Marlin model 1895. The 40-65 Winchester was loaded in both black powder and smokeless versions and Winchester catalogs listed it until 1935. UMC was the Union Metallic Cartridge corporation. One of several brands of the past.

Nice bunch of finds.
I'm curious about the musical reeds. If they can be found 'regularly'

I find a few also, so they are melodian reeds, is that correct?

I find these things ALL the time too!!! I found a whole mess of them in one yard alone. I've heard that they come out of air powered keyed instruments such as Accordions, Concertinas, and Pump Organs. I'm not surprised. Usually when I find these I also scare up in the same place pocket watch guts, clock guts, and gears. My guess is that the place at one time was home to a budding mechanical engineer who risked a good tanning from Pa because he (or she) just HAD to take something apart to "see what made it tick".

Seems to be a great lost American pasttime.

Re: 3 "What is it"

The .40-65 was a black powder cartridge thus the designation stands for .40 caliber, 65 grains of black powder. Monty

What's the deal with all the reeds popping up? I have found them, too. Must have been a bunch of musicians who didn't take care of their instruments.

Just think if we put all the reeds together! Oh man so busted ;D

Re: 3 "What is it"

I've never found a reed but I think if I did I would spend a little more time checking out that particular area. Perhaps it use to be part of a park where concerts were held. Or perhaps if it is a large reed, there use to be an old church with a pipe organ. If it is one of those little harmonica reed thingies and in a historic area it could have been dropped or discarded by a civil war participant. Lots of possibilities exist. I think a lot of things are missed because we don't take the time or have the imagination to read the clues. I'm just as guilty as anyone so don't do as I do, do as I suggest. M ;) nty

I found this reed near the cellar hole I have been digging out. Still alot more area to cover there I'm not even close to being completed with that site.
