I found half of a Parsons & Smith crotal (or petal) bell this past weekend. It's diameter is 1-7/8" and it's Marked "No" with a "." under the "o". I'm not sure what the size was (4 or 5 I'm guessing--hopefully someone can help here). On the Internet I found the following quote "two holes on the base date bells to the early 1800s and four holes on the base date bells to mid/late 1800s." I'm not sure how accurate this information is.

Is there any other writing on your bell? Here's a site that contains some more information:

That is a fairly rare find, I have found a couple dozen myself, and the largest is in the 2 inch range. I don't recall seeing too many posted of the larger sized ones either. As well the bigger ones are most often broken from farming equipment.

Here is another link that gives a complete history of the crotal, and can help date them.

I would work that area good - I have found old items like that in newer school fields - come to find out
long before there were schools there - spots were 1800 farm field - so you might pull out some other oldies there down deep
