Today I had a good day on campus. My coil lead me to some goodies. I got out of my truck and found a gift card on the pavement. I have checke it out and it still has $7.00 on it. Then I started swingin the CZ 21, a dime, then pennies, then out pops the nice little silver Conestoga wagon charm with a broken loop. 17 more pennies before the next dime as I worked my way over to an area I was planning on grid searching. I crossed the walking path and got two good signals on the same swing, one was a penny and the other was the plain silver ring. Things were looking good.
I got to the area I wanted to do and began the search. A decent number of coins were there, along with the usual can slaw, tabs, and junk. About half way through the grid out pops another silver ring. This one is mashed and is an adjustable size ring for kids with planets on it. As I got close to the end on my grid I got another coin signal and down in the hole was a big round that turned out to be a large cent. It’s pretty toasty, but after a little tooth picking I’m pretty sure it is an 1854. As I was detecting today I talked to a man who told me he remembered the two old farms that were here before the campus was built so now I know why I am finding the older items (crotal bell, lead die, and large cent).
Do these things bother you as much as they bug me? These aluminum beverage caps are all over the place on campus and they sound pretty good on my detector. They are sometimes more of a problem than pop tabs.
Along with the other goodies I did get a toy car that is slightly flattened and 110 coins, face value $6.95. So a good day. I have had better days money wise on campus, but the variety of finds was really good today.
As I was detecting today I picked up some trash as usual and put it in my large jeans bag I keep my large finds and extra tools in. I also found some river rock gravel scattered in the grass that some kids must have thrown around. I buried these when I dug up targets so they wouldn’t be hit by the mower in the spring. As always I made sure all my holes were filled in with the grass on top and stomped down firmly so it is hard to tell I dug there.
I do these things because I remember that my permission to detect here is a privilege not a right. That permission can be revoked at any time and I cannot do anything to change that once it happens. If I leave a mess and fail to obey the wishes on the property owner or caretaker I may also make it hard for other detectorists to gain permissions in the future. Conversely if I do a good job, and am friendly when people ask questions and share my finds with the property owner it could gain me other permissions from word of mouth. Just a few things to keep in mind.
Sorry for the rant, I will get off my soap box now.
Thanks for looking and may your coil lead you to good things.
