In 1883 the US Mint made a nickel without the "CENTS" on the back, Only a roman numeral V. Because it was new, and people were unfamiliar with it the counterfeiters gold plated them and passed them off as five dollar gold coins. The mint corrected the error and changed the coin to include cents. I have one of each in my collection. The one that is gold plated is in perfect condition. The coin with cents is worth more than the one gold plated
