It appears to be a bayonet but probably like you, I have never seen one like it and especially one with a bend and that screws on! Sure would make a mean tire tool.:laughing7:

I have never seen a bayonet that screws on like that and ive seen alot of bayonets in my time.My guess is that somebody was making a bayonet out of a lug wrench.

Not sure why its bent like it is. I'd believe that collectors of these would consider it damage. Looks like the point on yours is a bit bent also.

Only difference is.. My dad confirmed it.. It was made bent... it wasnt bent later on. You can tell by the shape/form of it.. also... this thing is tough as crap, aint no bending it.

EDIT:
are those screw on by the way?

what pitch are the threads?

Just a thought. Could it be that the bending of the metal was the result of a lightning strike? I've seen other styles (lighter in construction than yours) that this happened to. If that happened, there might not be any 'evidence' of it being pounded or physically altered.

the screw on is the same as the one greenhorn posted, but im still confused about the lightning bending it.. if these things were mean to be used multiple times... why would it bend THAT bad? another possible hunch is.. theres a confederate camp down the roadd we live on, i can walk to it.. maybe in desperate times that had to make make shift bayonets? XD:laughing7::laughing7:

It is definitely an antique (late-1800s-through-early-1900s) lightning rod's finial. Examine the photos below -- one is a closeup showing what you found and the other shows the full length lightning-rod assembly. They turn up for sale on Ebay occasionally, advertised as a "Confederate flagstaff top," and sometimes advertised as what they really are.

I am no expert, but I don't believe this is a Bayonet. Bayonets can be mounted and the rifle could still be shot. How could this item be mounted?

Have never seen a screw-on bayonet. If that is what it is it would not be US issue.

Would be odd for muzzleloaders as there are no fitting at the muzzle available to screw on to (with bolt threads).

And the bend would disallow use as itr would swivel to either side, so straight . . . maybe.

What's the length on it?

I would have to go wit a bent lightning rod tip - 1880's to 1900.

There were once plug bayonets before there were the socket bayonets.Plug bayonets were stuffed into the muskets muzzle, basically a long knife with a round handle.

I don't know but something about it strikes me as it not being a spiked bayonet. The flutes don't seem to be deep enough to be the most effective, see in the pics:
