Afternoon Gang, Hopefully everyone is 'fine as frog hairs' and escaping this terrible heat and humidity. I have 3 unknowns that were found in a Civil War area (of course, I know that could mean nothing.) Item #1 is thick brass and is about 3/4" tall cup-like. Item #2 is threaded on the small end, and I think is made of pewter. Item #3 might be a button, but not sure because of the 4 tabbed teeth. Any thoughts and ideas would be appreciated. ;D Breezie

My guesses would be ...

#1- Looks a lot like half of a brass ball from a set of horse hames. Some of the older ones have small brass balls like this one on them.

#2- Quite a stretch on this guess but maybe part of a cane handle. I have seen one found at a period house site that was pewter with threads so the stick could have been attached. Similar to yours but not exact.

#3- My guess for this would be a possible saddle or some other leather adornment. The "hooks" I believe would have been poked through leather and bent over. Thats why my guess for this would be a decorative saddle thingy.

Hi Breezie, from New Zealand, where we're finer than a frog's hair :laughing7: and enjoying a blast from the South Pole, which is currently coating our more Southern parts in the heaviest snow falls in a decade - bring on global warming!!

On subject; put all your three finds together for a baby's rattle :dontknow:

Cheers, Mike

Well, now, aren't y'all just 'fine as frog hairs split twice.' I never thought about a baby rattle; now we need a pic. Would a baby rattle be brass with a pewter/lead handle? DirtyMike, I think the walking stick handle might be something to consider too. So, are we in agreement the tiny ball thing definitely goes inside of an antique baby rattle, and not sure whether the pewter handle is for the rattle or a walking stick?

Thanks for your replies, Breezie

Thanks TT for looking; I've been doing the same thing, and have a few similar to the last pic you posted. I'm satisfied the large & small balls are rattle parts. The handle is iffy, and could go several ways. I do believe it is a handle of some description, whether walking cane, rattle, or etc. I think I can green check this one. Thanks to all ;D Breezie

I agree, the handle is iffier than a frog's hair split twice and bound around a snake's leg ;D
