1851-1873.The nickle 3 cent peice were made from 1865-1889.They were made of 75% copper and 25% nickle and were made to replace the silver 3 cent pieces.
Also the redbook says that nearly all the non proof coins from 1863-1872 were melted in 1873.

Sorry I thought they were silver. I have 3 of them, they about half the size (or less) of a dime.
On one of them, you barely can see what looks like 1853. They have a star with sheild on one side and lll
on the other. When I get my jpeg files converted to jpgs, I'll post some pictures.
Thanks for all the help. You people are the best :D

The early ones with star on one side and the c shape with the 3 roman numeral ones on the other are silver.
If there is head on one side and 3 large roman numerals with a wreath around them on the other they are nickle 3 cent pieces.
Try searching for silver 3 cent pieces and you should be able to find pics of both kinds.

Yeah,Thats what I have. 3 of them. They are silver and they "ring" when you drop them on the table.
Thanks very much.Sometimes its hard to decide what you have without a picture to compare the coin to.
