Hi everyone. Found this last summer at a old park were an observatory is. It's a place were they have been looking at stars from 1860 when they built it. They have huge telescopes inside and you can pay a few bucks to take a tour and look through the telescopes. It's a historic landmark. There is ground surrounding it and you can hunt it because it's in the park. I got a hit if I can recall bouncing in the high forties about 5 inches deep. It was in some bad soil. All clay were I dug it. This is a so called hunted out spot to. It's not the detector you use. It's how much you know about it. Guys before me came through there with the same machines and left me some old coins behind. They were to lazy to dig the trash. I've spent a good couple thousand hrs on the dfx. I use my own programs. I have had alot of good contacts from people who explaned a ton to me about this machine. That's a huge factor in this hobby. Knowing just a little more than the last guy did will yield you tresure in tough places. I do it all the time. Every local park that's old I go to and over one summer still find tons of good stuff left behind.

I showed the backside of the coin because it is so oxidized you won't be able to see it. Don't know if I'll come across any more of these. I still recall the day I dug it. Me and my 4 yr old son were together. I picked it out of the hole and couldn't see anything on it. I don't mess with my finds in the feild. So I put it in my pocket. I thought to myself from the size it was one of those play coins from the 40's or 50's. But it was too heavy. So I got it home and realized what I had. I didn't expect to find a 3 cent coin there at all.

Hope you guys like it. Good luck to all HH Jeremy.

Thanks, I was pretty shocked when I realized what I had. I always thought of finding one but when it happens it's like a shock. Like the day has finally come. I guess good things come to all that wait and perserver. The stuff is out there. If you got everything overnight you wouldn't want to treasure hunt as much. That's what keeps me searching hard. The fact that there is always some new discovery to be made. Most important really is just having fun. If I can't go out and detect and just relax it's not fun. It's my escape for a few hrs of this tough world.

Good Luck Jeremy.

Fantastic find! It amazes me how many old coins are still there to be found if you are willing to work for them. Jim Cal

Thanks you guys and girls. Hey free2dtect, I haven't found any nickle three cent peices yet. Those are pretty rare finds to with a detector. I'll keep that vdi reading in mind. Thanks for sharing that with me. If it's there I'll find it.

Take care everyone HH Jeremy

You've said it all Jeremy, I'm still waiting for one of them and am sure I've walked over a few. Nice find!

Congratulations, JerDFX,
That has to be one hard to find coin, not only because of the rarity but the small size. You are right about people not digging the trash. Trash can mask so many good targets. My hunting partner and I have hunted one, two acre homesite (dating to the 1850's) for well over a year and we continue to retrieve targets. We have, conservatively, taken probably four thousand targets out of the ground (trash targets and "good" targets). The site has not been occupied since 1944, so we esentially dig everything. When we finally decide that we have "worked out" the site, another rare button or coin comes out of the ground. I am convinced that a site can never be "worked out". Also, as metal detector depth improves each year, that essentially makes the thoroughly worked sites, virgin sites again. Just my thoughts on the matter. Keep digging.

Yeah garbage will hide alot. I found a old picnic area last summer. It was loaded with trash. It was about the size of a football Field. We went to the spot 3 or 4 times until I finally found a war nickle one day. Then my brother found a couple Indians. We found so many Indians, v nickles, foreign coins ,gold rings. None would have been able to just pick those hits out of the garbage. It takes some persistence to figure out that there may be treasure under all that trash.

Those 3 cent coins are small. I never saw one until I found one and couldn't get over how little they are. There must be thousands of those little suckers around somewere.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Take care HH.
