Hi all,

If you have not seen the first topic from this site here it is:

http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,106668.msg771750.html#msg771750

Anyway, went back there today, but did not find a gold coin :'( I took a teen from my church with today, and gave him a history lesson about his own country. I explained how the site worked, and also taught him about Paul Kruger, and what the war was about.

We then got down to detecting ;D He found 2 bullet cases and 1 bullet head. Not bad for a first time.

I found 2 Bullet heads, a split casing, a button, a piece of bayonet ??? and a piece of metal with a chain joined onto it..... I have seen this before, but cannot think what it is. But I am pretty sure it comes of a weapon / cannon somewhere.

We had a great time, and both are now very sore, he told me before we left, that he is fit seeing as he rides a cycle and swims alot, I laugthed at him.... When we got back to his house, he climbed out of the car and walked like a crab to the front door.

All in all, a very fruitful educational day for the two of us.

God bless
Peter

WELL DONE PETER on your research/teaching and finds !!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Peter...Just noticed your post. I have detected in SA a little and get over there from time to time. I have not had the opportunity to detect some Boer war sites but know where there are several. Would like to meet up with you, I should be your way in April or May. I am a Whites dealer and will be bringing several machines to try out.
Keep well...

Rege-PA, welcome to the forum, you will enjoy it here, lots of great people, and lots of good information.
When you come this side, you must give me a shout.... I am in the Johannesburg region....

EDDEKALB, thanks for the great comments... it is good to get to teach someone that can make a difference in time to come.... he is a part of the future in this country.

Thanks fuji, yes it is a great site. If you look at the other topic there are pictures of the site. There have been many other people here in the past, but like everyone here keeps telling me, a site is never detected out, there is always some left behind..... they never found the gold coin ;D

God bless
Peter

Looks like a very interesting site with amazing history. It's so important that today's kids understand the history of their country. A history lesson combined with metal detecting is a great way for history to come alive..good job!!

Thanks guys, I appreciate all the replies and motivation ;D you guys and gals are a blessing ::)

Tinnie, thanks for the pictures of the buttons, I will look out for them at all these sites... The worst part is, that the Boers never had uniforms, but used the clothes that they wear from day to day. The British stuck out like sore thumbs with their red uniforms ::)
As far as the bushmen is concerned, all I know is that they were used by both sides as trackers, not sure about anything else, that is something that I must still read up about.... lots of them were put into camps. The Boers were just common farm people protecting their land.
rtde3, if it is a bayonet piece which we believe it to be, then it was from the British side. How it was broken is a mystery indeed, umm maybe thrust into somebody causing it to snap off :'(

I will most definately be going back in the very near future, I know when the detector club was running, they used to come to this site. They found all sorts of great things like, water bottles, artillery shells etc etc..... All I am getting is the stuff that got away ;)

God bless
Peter
