Went back on the ATV trails with my son only this time (daughter didn't want to go this time). First stop was at the top of the trails/hill that I was getting a quarter signal. left it last time cause I was running out of time. Went there first and still could not find out what the machine is detecting. got a 1 foot wide hole by about 6 inches deep and still can't find this thing. Will have to go back with a shovel next time cause it's bugging me now. Anyway, didn't want to waste too much time there so I went back towards the spot where I dug up the 1850's large cent the prior week. It was on one of the paths (which there are many). The detectors were going all over the place on these trails this week. Don't know what was causing it but the machines would be binging on all scales from trash to silver and from 2 inches to 8 inches. Just were acting funny. Noticed small lumpos of I believe coal on the ground. Maybe this was flaking them out??
Anyway on the top of this particular path where I found last weeks large cent me and the boy didn't find anything so I started detecting back down the path towards the main branch where a few trails meet. Naturally since starting this hobby I am always looking on the ground and I noticed to the side of the path near the grass a circular object with green on it. Grabbed it up and it turned out to be my 2nd large cent. 1842 is the year on it. The backside is in better shape that the 1850's one but the front is worse except the date of course) than the 1850's one. The best is that I didn't even have to dig this one up! The ATV's and dirt bikes must have churned it up and threw it to the side of the path.
After finding that I went on some more paths and had my son just scope around with his eyes cause he was getting ticked at the detector he had cause of the false signals. I found another button I believe but not sure cause it is skinny like a washer and a little larger than a nickel. It looks like something broke off it on the back and the word "PLATED" is written on it. Will post the pic here but also in the "what is it" section. Found another thing that could be a cufflink that says "sterling" on it. It was sticking out of the ground also shining silver at me, that is how I found it.
Last two things are a part of a lead bar, not sure what it was for and a square identification plate of some sort that has "J.W.C No 27" on it. Does not look like it was machine stamped because the periods seperating the initials are not lined up. You will see what I mean in the pics.
Well it looks like I have me a prime spot to search. When I get tired of searching it (HA HA) I will do as Bergie did and see if anyone wants to tag along with me and see what they can come up with. Since there are a few trails maybe a few people would like to come.
Thanks for looking and HH
