Here's a pic of the back. Also found with 26th Regiment of Foot 26a.jpg26.jpg2.jpg2a.jpg

Nice find, hope you're able to get a definite I.D. on this early pewter button.
I did some research and found this information...

2nd (Queen's Royal) Regiment of Foot
Raised 1 October 1661 as the Tangier Regiment.

The Queen's Royal Regiment (West Surrey) was a line infantry regiment of the English and later the British Army from 1661 to 1959.
It was the senior English line infantry regiment of the British Army, behind only the Royal Scots in the British Army line infantry order of precedence.

Ok, that back is an American style back. A FEW of the provincial buttons used this back, but 90% used the kind that your 26th button uses. More than likely it is of American manufacture, but I'm having a hard time seeing a number on it. If it is a number, it is probably an early Continental line button.

The French did not make buttons like this for us during the war.

Maybe this will help. The number is actually easier to see in the thumbnail than in the enlarged picture.

American buttons from the Rev War would stand up, not be engraved. I can't tell by the picture how yours was made.
