I went back to the farm on Sat. I didn't get to put as much time in as I would've liked since my brother-in-law bought a new fourwheeler and wanted to try it out. So I put MD'ing on the back burner which turned out to be in my favor. While descending a new trail I noticed some oddly placed square stones in the middle of a briar patch with poison ivy all around on a little flat. I hate poison ivy about as much as it hates me. So after considering the consequences I decided to carefully take a closer inspection. It looked like it must have been an old foundation or a chimney that had fallen over the years. I HAD to check it out since it was within 50 yards of the spot where I found the Indian Head and ring.
As I was wading through the ivy and trying to bend the briars down under foot, that was when I knew I was truely addicted to metal detecting. As soon as I turned my MXT on I got an overload signal over one of the stones. I yelled back to my brother-in-law (who was still standing on the clear trail telling me to be careful of copperheads) that it's something big under one of the stones. So there I was faced with another dilemma...Do I want to risk turning over this stone and getting bit by a snake that I wasn't even sure was there?...or pass up an old cache or who knows what just waiting to be discovered?
The whole time I was trying to pry this stone up I was thinking of the old saying "curiousity killed the cat". lol
After seeing I wasn't bit my brother-in-law chose to help me dig. We found a couple of pieces of cast iron about 4 inches down. I was a little let down but decided to go on. A foot away I got another overload signal and another piece of mysterious cast iron. This went on a couple more times before I started getting other hits. The last overload signal of the day turned out to be one of my favorite finds of the day. It was an old clothing iron missing the handle.
Here's a rundown of what we dug up... I hope you enjoyed this story, I know I enjoyed reliving it!
Pieces of cast iron - top and right of first pic & top of second pic
A boot heel - found while digging up cast iron
Old nails and a nut
3 round rings which looks like they might be off of a bridle or something, one looks like a buckle and one has a metal band attatched on one side
2 porcelain mason jar lids, one was still intact but I left it at the farm
A red faced pocket watch, found in my backyard while waiting for my brother-in-law that morning
Piece of a plow?, second row left of second pic
My new iron, second row right of second pic
A log splitting wedge
A cast iron kitchen decor of a watering can or kettle
More nails and some kind of chisel/tool
