Hello All,

It was forecast to be 63 and sunny today, so I had to get out and scratch the itch. No video this time. Left my video camera at home. :( But I got out in the cane fields and managed to get a handful of brass and copper, lots of pack studs, a parasol clip, some pottery, and fortunately two silver coins. The first coin I knew would be a silver dime. Only several inches deep, it locked right in on my F75. It was an 1899-O Barber. Some porosity to the obverse, but a rather nice reverse to the coin. Here is a just dug photo, and photos of the coin afterward:

Then I got another great coin signal and dug what looked like a Barber Quarter sticking out of the clod:

But when I pulled it free from the dirt, I was surprised to see that it was a Seated Quarter!

My last Seated Quarter was in 2013 January. Then Shanegalang dug a Seated Quarter in January 2014. Now I've dug this one in January 2015. So they seem to be in season during this month. :laughing7:

Anyhow, sucks about the hole in the coin. Man, what a hole!! BUT, I was still able to narrow down the date range. As you can see, this is the "with arrows" variety, which was minted 1853-1855, and then later in the 1870s again the coins had arrows beside the dates. But for the later "arrows at date" quarters, none were minted in New Orleans. And this one is an Orleans mintmark. That leaves 1853-O, 1854-O, or 1855-O. The 1853's had rays on the reverse around the eagle, but as you can see this coin does not. So it is either an 1854-O or 1855-O. :headbang:

Here is a photo of both coins, just dug, and a nice spanish moss-covered tree that I walked by while scouting today.

Best Wishes to all in 2015,

Buck

Really nice finds congrats on the success and thanks for sharing. Very nice post also.

If you promise to stop posting temps in the 60's, I will continue to read your posts, Buck...otherwise....
Lol, great save and nice date ID. Maybe next year one of you gets a BU one!

Very nice Barber, but that Seated has got character! Love it.

That Seated looks to have been worn as a necklace for a spell.

COOL finds dude....-4 tomorrow AM:tongue3:..want some??:laughing7:

GOD Bless

Nice going on the two silvers Buck a good start to the year.
Must say though that quarter has been kicked, scratched, walked/stomped on, rolled & drove over, beat, squished, and loved as it was holed to be worn, that alone gives it true character!
I would put up as a coin that truly shows its age and would be displayed as such showing not everything comes up in quality condition.

Great start Buck! I'm always amazed at how different the holes in coins can be. Some are so small and neat and some are just big and nasty. Hope you have a great 2015....and not cool with those temps bro. -10 in Maine tonight

Didn't take long to get back on the silver Buck - nice going! I still haven't made it out yet in 2015 - maybe soon.

OK, done! No more mention of the temps--except when it's 110 here in the summer while I'm digging (and 80 in NePa) :)

I have one decent condition Seated Quarter, dug 2013, but my other ones look like crap.

Certainly was important to someone. Circulated for a long time, then molested by the plow.

Ugh, no thanks! Didn't realize how brutal cold it was up there right now. :sadsmiley:

I agree. I was sad about the condition, but I like holed coins for that reason. Was nice to actually be able to narrow down the date for once. :)

Bill, I know you'll have a great year. Won't take long for you either to continue to amaze us with your fantastic finds, my friend.

Best Wishes,

Buck

Great job narrowing down the date on the Seated! Congrats on a 2 Silver day. As well I will live through all those that can hunt now, 5 inches of snow 8 degrees here today, everything is FROZEN! :o(

those coins are beautiful, as already said, the holed one has character, who knows, might have been someone's lucky piece. You have pulled out some awesome stuff down there, always enjoy your posts. congrats and keep finding them.

I'm lovin' that coin! Sweet find. I wish I could find a holed coin!
