2000 & 2007 Quarter Question.... Why Complete Silver Edge?

Found these in two different boxes over the weekend. I know the S proofs are silver, and these are no S'es. But both of these have complete silver edges to them. Does not sound like silver when dropped.

Any help.... What is the deal? I was going to dump them back into the wild. But, I figured I would ask the forum gods first. Thanks John HH

Some of the S proofs are silver, not all (they make both clad and silver proof sets). Sometimes clad coins minted for circulation have silver-looking edges because the layers aren't always even and the metal can kinda flow around and obscure the copper during striking. It's nothing to write home about.

Good eye, I am no error person, but if anything you get is questionable, it's worth a shot to post it on here to get opinions from people who may have knowlege. Like I say to myself, it's good to be sure, don't want to be returning a $500 coin into circulation :icon_thumleft:

My daughter found a P South Carolina just like yours a month or so ago ... A dealer verified it ain't silver. She's keeping it though, just for fun....

Get a digital scale and weigh it, then weigh a regular quarter. The scale whould be able to read 0.0000 to be sure of any difference. Mint employees are just like anyone else, they make mistakes or get careless -like shoving a nickel sheet through the quarter press. Or more likely it could be a foreign planchett.

Two like that, may have been plated or painted.

Use the scale.

These were chrome or silver plated and sold in complete sets on QVC or some other coin show. I find a lot of these. They are cool to collect the whole set, but are only worth 25 cents. Cool find.

Omegaman.... This is what I was thinking, plated. Just did not know from where

Thanks for the responses. Back into the wild they go. John HH
