Dug a cellarhole this past weekend ,and dug some buttons I need to confirm a date ID on them.I was told the eagle buttons were WW1-WW-2 marked on back Scovill Waterbury CT,the button with UNITED on front and S.appel & Co New York on back, the button with FD on front (fire dept) had iron incrusted on back so I could not make out the bench mark. All buttons were dug in a 20'x20' area along with flow blue pottery, salt glazed, old bottles etc,I thinking I was just starting too dig the top of a dump area, lots of iron, buckles etc.

Those are a lot of nice buttons. Take a look at BigCy's thread on the Great Seal buttons.

There is a LOT of great information on them in this thread.

Thanks found the info I needed they were made from 1870-1902.Great thread!!
In case there is any misunderstanding, all Great Seal US Army buttons are post 1902. The backmark may be older but the buttons cannot be older than 1902.

It appears you may have 1902-WWI era buttons with older Scovill backmarks. They used up old stock and/or dies for the war effort..
