Looks like it had a jewel at one time, the stud on the back looks a snap. I'm guessing cull link? Tony

Hey OWG, long time, no type :)

I think you have a late Victorian doorbell cover. The 'snake' motif became very popular around the 1840's and lasted almost to the turn of the century. Snakes were a symbol of eternal love or eternity as well as wisdom. When Albert proposed marriage to Queen Victoria, he gave her an engagement ring that was shaped like a snake with an emerald set in the head.

My best guesstimate for age would be late 1890s to turn of the century.

well well breezie..i was thinking the same thing but wasn't really sure..it came from one of the nicest house in the area and was built in 1847..
