HI GUYS AND GALS

Our for a couple hunts...6 hrs total detecting.

First day was cold -7c and windy ....out for 2 hrs...not nice at all.....lotsa iron and junky.....a 1902 canadian penny and few odds n ends.

Out today for 4 hrs...within 15 minutes had coin/ glass stopper and the neat ornate piece below.

Rest of the hunt was quite un-eventfull with a few musket balls and bale seal.

The gold colored ornate piece looks like it is made of lead on the back..it is black/grey like lead and when scratched it shines threw same as lead and is heavy for its size.

There is no gold color on the back.

The black stuff on the front comes off very easily with a rub of your fingers.

So...if it is made of lead what is the gold color stuff on the front. ?

And what would this piece be ?

This orante piece was found by cousin ED...pretty much his only find for the day other than junk..but he is very happy to have it.

Pictures of the oranate gold piece was taken at the end of the day...uncleaned.

Ty Rick OK...Looks like it very well could be just that.....didn,t get a picture of the back..forgot. But there is no clip on the back. What would be the gold colour on the front ???
I've got at least one of pewter, and the "clips" or rivets are rotted away, you still should see where there were two pins, rivets etc. Gold color is "probably" brass but hey from here I don't know that for sure, just is most likely.

Hey buddy love the ornate piece( whatever it may be) I also love old bale seals. I think they're really cool finds. Found a bunch of em from Germany this winter. Ya know your bad days are pretty good my man :-)

ty again..

How would they cover the pewter with brass ?

Sorry for all the questions..but I,m a believer in asking if you don,t know.... great way to learn !!!

TY Ahab...

Thats my 6th bale seal...ya they are neat pieces.

Not really any such thing as a bad day I guess if you are out relaxing swinging the detector !!!!... especially mid winter in Canada .

I would assume the brass sheet was stamped to that shape, and molten pewter poured in. that's how I would do it.

Cool..ty again.

Finds like that are pretty neat as they are really one of a kind...chances of ever seeing another the exact same are pretty slim.

Was out in he slimy mud past the rocks towards low water.....nasty stuff to dig in...and then try and find it after you dig it...big pile of slimey muck.

Almost lost my boots a couple times.

Yes there is quite a variety of them. I'll dig mine out for a pic tomorrow, it has no "plating" left on it.

I like those glass ones with a picture inside. I've got a couple glass ones, but no pic. in either of them.

You've been making so many good finds in your shoreline hunts, you may have a hard time coming back inland once the thaw hits:icon_thumright:

You may be correct.....I,ve found more nice things in the last 6 weeks on the shore than I did all last year on land. And old stuff at that.

It is as everyone says...location location location.

Glad I got a couple saltwater detectors. Maybe we will have the shore sites cleaned up before the ground thaws.

But i think it is almost impossible to clean out any site let alone a shore site...I think the wind and wave action replenishes the finds on beaches to an extent.

Great finds AQUA !

TY vpNavy and beepbeep

Nothing exciting to show but thought i would share.

The ornate piece is quite nice... glad cousin ED found it..he had a really slow hunt day before... so keeps him interested .

I,m already addicted so doesn,t really matter to me if I find the goods when I get out....just love getting out and looking.

ice finds Aqua - I would ay bridle piece as well or perhaps ornate furniture brass (early either way).

Nice finds

Sometimes 1 good find is what makes the day...even if I wasn,t the one that found it.
