That is a top to a Trumpet valve
Usually brass, with silver plate
It's the part that you push with your finger, to change the tone
Threaded, so they screw on, Or screw off in this case

I beg to differ. I think it's the bottom of a trumpet valve. The top cap is captive between the push-button and the valve core itself. But the bottom cap can fall off and get lost.

Could be silver or silver plate. If it was a high school field, chances are it is NOT. I played the flute in high school and the % of kids who had silver flutes was less than 10%. Most were silver plate.
