🔎 UNIDENTIFIED 2 Ring Bullets with Hole in Casing

I found one of these a while back and thought it was a one off interesting find. But now I found a second one just the other day about one mile from the first one that looks real similar. The hole is in only one side. I can't come up with a decent explanation. Any ideas as to what's going on here?

I need you to provide "precise" measuring of the bullet's diameter (at it fattest part) to be able to give you a 100%-certain ID. But for the moment... they appear to be either a .40 Leet Pistol cartridge (see photo below) or a .41 Derringer cartridge.

Sorry, but no, they definitely are not Pinfire cartridges. The "pin" on a pinfire is always located at the very bottom of the cartridge's side.

I cannot think of a reason to pierce the cartridges like we see in the photo, except to "string" them, such as ticndig's suggestion of a fishing-weight. Sorry, eyemustdigtreasure, but using them as pendants on a necklace seems a bit farfetched to me.

Maybe someone needed the powder to help start a fire...maybe needed a charge for a muzzle loader....neat finds for sure.
