How do you know if a coin is a merc? What is clad exactly and why is it called that?

Here is the "Mercury or Winged Liberty" or "Merc on T-Net" Design Dime from 1916 - 1945

And clad is any Dime, Quarter, Half Dollar, and Dollar coins made after the Coinage act of 1965. They did away with 90% silver coins in these denominations and replaced it with a inner core of copper, with outer layers of a silver-colored nickel-copper alloy.

If you get the chance look at the edges of both coins. You can see the difference in composition..
And when you drop silver has a high pitched ring....the clad is dull sounding

When you find a Merc., you will know..IMO, it's one of the prettiest coins ever made in the U.S., and because it's silver, it will gleam in the bottom of the hole..there's no mistaking it :) Good luck!
