Haven't posted any finds in a while as there hasn't really been much to post! Beaches haven't been good to me lately, no gold since April! A drought! Hope to correct that soon but in the meantime, here are some of the things from my last spin on the beach. Started at the "cave" where I ran into the Guru. He had just gotten there as well and wasn't having much luck. We both moved to the west just past where the barge and cranes have been working for the last few months. The area is all fenced off to keep people away from the excavator and barges when they are doing, whatever it is they are doing. Since the winter, they have been tearing out the old walls all along the beach (yielded some good old silver coins and jewelry this year) but they have been in the same spot for some time now, digging out what look like giant pits at the water's edge then lining them with big sheets of metal creating big "boxes" or some sort of coffer dams. Looks like they are back filling it with large boulders and sand that was excavated out. Sorry for the long description, didn't get any pictures. Believe it is all associated with future drainage as this area floods bad during big storms.
So.....about the hunt now......There was a nice cut on the side of the fence you were allowed to hunt. Pretty deep one compared to who it was been. Lots of rocks exposed in certain areas and a couple good low spots which was where most of the tgts were found. I hunted the cut as well in the damp/dry and managed the toasted rosie silver dime (no date) and a few pennies.
Ring was a junker and came right out of a low spot inthe rocks. The Guru had found an OLD small silver ring there the day before. While hunting, I spoke briefly with one of the construction guys who we always see out there. He was asking If I was planning on coming on to the other side of the fence where they were digging. Told him I wanted to stay out of their way while working (plus the foreman for the crew is kind of an a** and doesn't like people anywhere near his jobsite. I get it, np, don't wanna cause any issues ya know? He is kind of over the top though, he could be a bit nicer. An old lady on the beach, gathering sea glass, said that he yelled at her for walking through the area. They have the beach cut in two with no way to get around except in the water (around the barges) or up on a busy street. Surely they could be a bi nicer to the old lady who is just passing through and was nowhere near the equipment! Some of the local pirates (and us) have had some run ins with him this past year. The guys on the crew are all great, and they don't say it but you can tell they don't like him. Guy I talked to said to just come back after the day was done and hunt away! SO.......just after dinner, and as it was getting dark, I headed back to check out some of the sand piles and whatnot to see what I could find. The tide was up now so the low area with rocks on that side was covered up (damn) but was still able to hit the dry and some of the piles of sand. Didn't get to close to the water as I know with all the excavation and re-filling of holes, that the sand is not as compact in those spots and you could easily find yourself sucked up to you waist or deeper if not watching out! Hunted into the dark (glad I had my cap with built in light) and found some stuff but not what I was really hoping for. Did manage an old 1944 nickle and some pretty old lead as well as some other stuff.
Lots of beach glass on the first hunt and a marble to boot! Cool find was the 1957 5 Pesta coin from Spain. Wonder how THAT got there?
Thanks for looking!
