The shiny one is gold shiny and very pretty and the other you can see the eagle from the inside of button when opened up. 198C9676-4DD0-4C9D-AE74-EADF92467A9B.jpg8C21316A-20D1-4058-BCB9-D4046F0C7CE1.jpegA2791980-ADB8-4265-8F8A-93F6968BDE55.jpeg

I don't see an eagle. I do see a shield or crest with two people standing on either side of it. Can you post a clear picture of the button back? And, can you make out a backmark either from the back side or the inside. The inside will be reversed so it may take some studying.
I can see a backmark on the one piece button but can't make it out. Can you read it?

Dharmacy,
Do you have Alberts book? There is a Pennsylvania button (#52) on page 232 that looks like a match. It is the seal of Philadelphia.
Forgive the poor picture. I took it with my cell phone. If we need a clearer one I can scan it.

Yes, I think you are right. I do have Alberts book, but I am at work right now and was going from memory. The Maryland seal is similar.

I was going to look at Md. buttons and saw this one as I was thumbing through the book.

Thanks guys I meant shield not eagle. I’ll take more pics in the morning. Philadelphia would make sense I am close by

Any idea on age and purpose for Philadelphia button? Thanks much appreciated

If it has the "Horstmann/Philadelphia" backmark it would date to the late 1800s, 1893 or newer. I would think that Philadelphia probably issued uniforms to some of its employees.
