The first 2-piece button is a Connecticut State Militia button, for Enlisted-men's ranks (not Officers, who wore a 3-piece version). The one you dug was manufactured sometime i8n the 1840s-to-1850s, based on its RMDC (Raised-Mark-in-a-Depressed-Channel) backmark. If you can read enough of the backmark to make out the name, we may be able to give you more info about it.

The second 2-piece button is currently believed (but as far as I've heard, not yet solidly proven) to be a US Navy Chief Petty Officer's button. If so, yours was made sometime after 1893. According to Wikipedia, "The grade of Chief Petty Officer was established on April 1, 1893 for the Navy. The United States Congress first authorized the Coast Guard to use the promotion to Chief Petty Officer on 18 May 1920.[SUP]"[/SUP]

Or, it may be a foreign navy button, or a commercial Steamship company's button.
