2 more rifle cartridge ID's needed

I found 2 more different casings today at the 1820's homesite I have been hunting. The first one resembles the 44 cal. Henry I found last week ,but the markings are different. The large one says CR on top and C-90 on the bottom. The smaller one says WRA Co. and 25.20 WCF. I hope you can see the sizes next to the ruler alright. Thanks for the help. Ron

Re: 2 more rifle cartridge ID's needed

.25x20 would be .25 caliber backed by 20 grains of blackpowder I think.

25-20 is the caliber, like 30-06.I think it is the length and diameter of the actual bullet.

The .25/20 was introduced in the mid 1890's and generally was chambered in the Winchester 1892 rifle and the Marlin lever action. Was designed as more of a varmint cartridge than a deer cartridge.

Nice finds!
I have a .25-20
You can still buy shells for them.

I browsed through them, but aren't the headstamps pictured for shotguns? I didn't see any rifle cartridges, just what WRA stood for

Re: 2 more rifle cartridge ID's needed

25-20 was for sure 25 cal 20 grains black powder. Some similar designations were 44-40, 38-40, 30-30, 45-70 ect. The 30-06 stood/stands for 30 cal model or year 06, believe it was first carteridge to deviate from prior caliber and powder charge designations.

Believe WRA = Winchester Repeating Arms
" WCF= Winchester Center Fire

The 30-03 beat it by three years. ;D There were many others that were not designated by the caliber and powder charge before it, though.

If you could give us a measurement of the case mouth and case length on the C.R. brass, it would help the ID process greatly. It looks a fair bit smaller than .44 caliber to me.
