Well Rick and I got out last night for a quick evening hunt in a local field and apple orchard boy was the digging was hard. The clay dirt has turned to brick and can give you an extreme work out. The orchard didn't provide any coins but we did find evidence of a dwelling, lots of glass and good iron patch. I dug up a scrambled piece of copper (lower left) which I recognized right away as a lock plate from an old steamer trunk. I have found many on shipwrecks but when you find one in an apple orchard it tells me that there was most likely someone living in that area years ago. We will go back when the ground is softer and the apples have been harvested.
Any way we hit the field next to the orchard and I scored 2 coppers, one I can see a young Queen Vicky but the other is toasted. Hopefully after some rain we can re-visit the site and pick out some silver.
HH everyone,
ZDD

nice finds congrats HH

I can't picture the mangled copper piece as a lock plate from a steamer trunk. Do you have a better picture of it, maybe flattened out? It looks to me like the frame from the movement of an old table clock. It holds all the gears and what not together. I've found a few at old home sites. Just a thought. Thanks.

Sure Flathead25, here are 2 lock plates I recovered from a 19century shipwreck with the key hole plate. I am not sure how they plates worked with the locking mechanism but the one I found in the orchard has a swinging piece on it, as dose one of the ones I found on the shipwreck.

And here is a pic of the one I found in the orchard with the 2 shipwreck plates.

Hope this helps and if anyone has a break down image of this style lock plate please feel free to post it.

Again if you find one of these in a field it is a very good sign for sure so focus on that area for awhile and I bet you wont be dissappointed.:icon_thumleft:

i find many pieces like your 2nd lock plate, i always thought they were plates from inside a clock... interesting...

Nice finds.. Congrats in the success..

It's a guarantee there is something good around there we just need to find it. We will.

Nice going on the finds that you did manage and it showing there's more to the orchard once there's moisture in the soils again.

Interesting frame work pictures in relation to the lock set plates you've shown in the pictures, now there's a few folks :icon_scratch: that were thinking clock frames as I'm doing the same. Never even considered the two being linked before, good one Dave.

I would like to be 100% certain on this but the peices I got out diving all came from the same hole and the 2 key hole plates are the same dimensions as the frame pieces so I am 95% sure that is what they were for but I would love to find an intact one at a flee market or yard sale so I could take it apart and be 100% sure. Or see a clock piece with that frame work in it. Anyone have a pic of a clock with it in it, please post and help us solve the mystery?
