2 great days of diggin'....

Saturday I spent 3 hours at a Civil War site and got a carved minie and what looks like a much smaller than normal bayonet scabbard tip, also from an old home site, a nice 1865 2 cent piece and a 1895 IH . Today I got 2 Barber dimes, a totally toasted 190? V nickel, an 1899 IH, a 1920 wheatie and a CW era Hanoverian bullet. This area was an early CW training camp, but the Hanoverian is not the normal .65 Cal or the smaller pistol size. The standard .65 in this condition lists for 150$. I am doing research to see if this is an unlisted size. Totally cool bullet.

I shudder to think how many people would find a bullet like this and just toss it in a jar. The thing is there are well over 700 different types of bullets used during the Civil War, there are many collectors who specialize just in CW bullets. And quite a few command lofty prices, some up to 600-800$.
I introduced a guy 15 years ago who was just a coinshooter to CW relic hunting. Our first hunt I showed him a soldiers knapsack hook I had just dug and he told me "I dug one of those also, I just threw it away"...I aksed him why he would do that and he said "it didn't look shiny or important to me!" ;D

Thanks, I know you are most correct. The only thing I have 'thrown away' are a lot of pull tabs and a some cans. I have kept a LOT of very odd metal items. I think my wife is beginning to worry about the size of our house. ;D

The part that you said looks like a minature "bayonet Scabbard tip" looks like it is a cartridge of some type, much like a Burnside Cartridge.

This ain't an exact match but a cartridge like this:

Heh Dirtman, Yeah I considered a cartridge but I ruled it out due to two things:
there are remains of a black paint on it (visible in photo) and the small end had a ring that came off which I believe was used to hold a finial in. I like the way you think though!
