Today I went to my best friend's house in Mainsville, PA. It is just outside of Shippensburg , PA and has had history. During June of 1863 Confederates invaded Shippensburg. They later sent forces to Mainsville to retrieve supplies. I don't know how old this Musket Trigger part is, so if someone can help me date it that would be great. I have never found one of these but it was in the spot they ravaged for supplies. 2nd I found a old chain with odd links. There was a tree root growing through it and I almost killed myself trying to cut through the root and pull it out. The thing is at least 20 feet long as you will from the photo's. The 3rd Item is uh....who knows. No coins today but VERY happy with the musket part and will be even happier if it is civil war era. Either way, I had fun and that is what Metal Detecting is all about :headbang: And YES I DID DO A HAPPY DANCE WITH THE MUSKET PART LOL!

Chain looks like a dog chain. Used to use something like that for our dog when I was a kid.

Love that musket part!! I'm no expert but it looks civil war to me!

Awesome finds! Better yet we got a happy dance from you, just not on film! Enjoy your hunt, HH!

If the line where the two portions meet goes straight across, it could be an 1853 Enfield.

That would be nice because both sides used Enfields.

Whatever it is, it looks like the right time period for what you're hoping. Great find!! This is why I dig iron. Though I have not yet found one of those.

Thanks everyone! I just posted some photos of a book a dear friend gave me today about this area in the General Discussion forum. I took some photo's of some of the pages that show the activity. The GF is sleeping so had to snap a few and turn the lights back off. It is going to help me find even more areas between here and Chambersburg now :)

That is a side hammer for percussion cap muzzle loader, looks to be extremely old to me, that is all I know, I bet a good old gunsmith would love to tell you where that came from.
Nice find.
What did the chain ring on what machine were you using? How deep were your targets?

Surveyors used to use chains to measure property. Perhaps it's one of those, especially if it's like 20' long.

It does go straight across. Could be an Enfield. Probably there's someone on here who could tell you for sure. I do know there was some variation in hammers. You'd have to compare it with a known one to see if the angles and the distance between the square hole and the recessed part would line up.

Or, like TNGUNS said, maybe it's a Springfield.

on the F2 the Chain was a solid 15 on Iron. Same with the musket piece although a few times it was between 12-15. Musket Piece maybe 5 inches deep. That area is woods and the chain was like 1 inch i think. Pin pointer went off sticking it to the ground. Although It did go down freakin far to pull the whole thing up I spent forever cutting through the tree root growing through it.

If you go back and dig deeper you might find the dog it was attached to.:laughing7: That hammer is to cool, living here in California we don't get the chance at Civil war items. I'm jealous.

Agree with others on the chain. Chain lead for dogs. looks more modern.
