Is it made of brass? What is the date of the area you are searching? Looks like part of a horse harness or saddle from around 1800-1830.

Yeap - Brass
Date of area - Metal finds from 500BC, flints from 7000BC - modern

Sorry. No pics. I've searched numerous times to find pics of the parts to construct epaulettes and never found any. I know they used thin metal to keep them straight and stiff. Modern ones use plastic.

I would guess the number 8 would indicate size or style as epaulettes vary widely among ranks and specialities - but I'm only guessing...

You seem to be finding lots of uniform related items at the site and it was the first thing that came to my mind.
