2 Draped Bust & 2 KG II* 1 with COUNTERSTAMP
My brother-in-law, DigginitRTB and I, decided to look for new spots last night and came across a couple of beauties! Not only coins but some nice buckles and buttons too. Seems to be a promising area. The draped busts were found at the same site. One is 1802 and the other is SHOT. Hard to believe they came from the same site. With Richies KG II, I was able to get a date off of which would be 1750. Kind of tough but it's there. I'm thinking the real prize is my KG II, which has 2 of the same counterstamps. They both read "I-F" in old script letters. One has a hole punched into it. They look pretty awesome under magnification. Have posted this coin to the C-4 website to see if there is any info about this stamp. Pretty strange as it was illegal to deface the Kings portrait with any stamps, prior to 1800. This is a cast CFT. I would still like to know a bout the counterstamp though. It could have been put there by a silversmith checking his dies and punches. Don't have a weight on it yet, but it is 28mm in size. I need an experts opinion on this one. The reverse has been etched with "X-I-F", more than likely by a previous owner after circulation. I have a counterstamped LC, but this one is VERY interesting if you ask me. Maybe I got another "GOODIE" We will post more finds from these sites as I'm sure there is more to be had. I can't wait! HH Hogge P.S. The May flies were absolutely BRUTAL!
