Detector(s) used
GARRETT 350 GTA
My mom gave my two sons one silver 50 cent a piece last month and the 6 year old has dreams of National Treasure in his head. He already scavengers HS football games for dropped money.

So, we got a used metal detector off Ebay...a slightly used Garrett GTA 350 for $125...should be here in 2 weeks.

Doing research on MD'ing over the last few days...I am pumped...so pumped that I began hunting early.

I went to my mom's house to look through the drawers of my father's old desk...it's a huge desk...and i am an accountant by trade and so was my dad from the 50's until he died in 1991. I was mainly looking for old accounting artifacts (old ledger books, adding machines, that kind of stuff...) I opened the bottom drawer and saw a white cloth bag. I picked it up thinking it might be money (praying it was)...but I quickly came to the conclusion it wasn't. It felt a little heavier than it looked and didn't feel like change feels when it rattles nor did sound like it...my next thought was marbles...then maybe casino chips...well, lets just open it and find out.

Well, I'm 35, born in 1972. I have never held a bag full of old change (silver) it doesn't feel or sound like change today. I emptied the bag and found this.

1 - 1964 half dollar
19 - pre 1964 quarters
14 - rosie dimes
2 - mercury head dimes
8 - wheat pennies (lincoln)
2 - wheat pennies (pre-lincoln)
1 - Canadian Penny (1950)
1 - German 5 Pennig (1950)
2 - 1900 quarters - they are worn down pretty good and I don't know their name
1 - standing liberty
42 - Buffalo nickels (and some in excellent condition)
and 2 coins i have yet to indentify...i will post pic later for all to see

we now have officially started a coin collection. my mom said she knew there was more but didn't know where but i was free to look around anytime.

by the way, is there a safe way to clean this...i dont want to brush them or anything...just get the little bit of grime of the top. and what is best way to store them.

I could be mistakn but, don't clean them. As is put them in coin shutters, those things with clear plastic in the center and cardboard edges. I'd probably even use a set of tweezers so I didn't smear em any more than they might already be. Your dad was a smart man, I'm sorry you lost him so early.

thanks...i really would just like to clean some of the grime off of some of them to see what kind of condition they are in ... and to make out the 2 coins i can't identify.

Thanks again about my Dad. Great man and very anal retentive...so we are sure he has more and probaly in as good of shape as these..(some of the nickels and 1 mercury looked like the were made in this century)...so i will begin to raid the attic until my detector comes in.

Welcome to TNet. Those are some nice finds W\O a MD! Sorry about your dad. Look forward to seeing pictures of you finds.

So, for the coins in ok condition and clearly marked and identifiable...we are saying dont worry about the little grime...just as is...in a holder(have to get that of Ebay too :).

The ones I am having trouble making out and there are quite a few that look like they just need water and a quick soft rub and i could gleam their information...date, etc....would that be ok.

I was going to clean all, you know to make the ones already in good condition shine...but i think i will leave those alone and just put them up.
