1st dig of 2009 meets a New Year's Goal!
Hi, everybody,
Like many of you, I have detecting goals in mind for the new year. One of my goals for 2009 was to find a Standing Liberty Quarter, because although I have found Barbers and silver Washingtons, no SLQ's had crossed my path. By now you know how this one turns out.
I joined Neil and Richard today near the University of Oregon (Holiday Bowl Champions!) for my first hunt of 2009. After greeting the guys, who had just gotten started, I geared up and found a place out of their way.
I turned on the detector, put it on the ground, and before my mind even focused on what I was doing, I got a sweet signal that quickly drew my attention. "Quarter, 4 inches down" it said. In our part of the country, 4 inches down can mean a lot of things, so I was hardly thinking of silver, though it was a possibility.
Because there was a chance of silver, I gave the target ample room with my digger. (I had scarred a Barber in October when I wasn't concentrating and she showed up by surprise.) The silver edge showed up and I couldn't believe that my very first dig of 2009 was going to be a silver quarter. Then I brushed the dirt aside with a finger and there was the distinctive flying eagle reverse. I had found Miss Liberty standing there waiting for me!
Her date was long gone. Later in the afternoon, she was joined by a 1954-D Roosevelt dime. I thought I might meet another of my New Year's goals, which was to dig more than 2 silver coins in the same day (I've dug 2 on 6 or 7 different occasions, but never 3!) but that goal will have to wait for another day.
I will try to add photos to this post tomorrow. I am notoriously bad with a camera.
Anyway, a dateless SLQ on the very first dig of the year, and a silver Rosie later on, gets me off to a great start for 2009!
Thanks for reading this,
Mike
