Hi all,

My 14 yr. old daughter and I went out on Saturday to a beach near my mom's home. This particular beach is rather small and is on a lake. I know it's been around for quite some time because I swam there as a kid.

We just messed around for about an hour or so and we found a few coins and of course the old faithful drink tabs and lids...overall, enjoyed ourselves and we were able to learn a little about hunting the beach. My daughter loved it...she just dug and dug...(so much easier than "dirt").

Below are our findings...any quick tip for cleaning???

Oh--and we're "practicing" for a trip to Destin/Fort Walton...so we'll be glad to take any pointers!!!

Nice mix of coins, looks like your doing everything right. I saved all my dirty coins like that for a couple of years, then bought a rock tumbler to shine em up with.

Sounds like enjoyable quality time...and keepers too! ;D

Nice finds for your first beach hunt. You are right, the digging is much easier in sand. Be sure to look into a good sand scoop before you go to Destin. The sand is so powdery soft there you will need it. As far as cleaning, the rock tumbler and aquarium gravel does wonders on coins like you found. Either add a little water and dishwashing fluid or maybe a little lemon juice. Just be sure your not tumbling any that may be key dates or leave them in too long. Also don't mix the pennies with the silver coins.
Happy hunting and keep the find coming.

Great post i take my daughter who is 11 and my son who is 8 out with me once in a while. We take turns with one swinging the detector while the other wears the headphones...we get some weird looks! :o

Thanks, all...

Do you recommend any particular sand scoop?

The sand scoop I use does not have a long handle. It is galvanized metal and light to carry. It is shaped like the letter "D" if you look at the back of it with small holes all over it so the sand falls through but will not let dimes or anything bigger fall out. I picked it up from a local dealer in Englewood FL on my first beach visit with a detector. It is a sweet sound when you scoop sand up, shake it a little and hear that target bouncing around.

Great beach huntin'. Hope ya'll have a great time in Florida. I've seen homemade sand scoops made from dollar store juice pictures with 3/8 and 1/2 inch holes drilled in them. A lot cheaper than the $50 to $100 scoops.

Keep safe....

Looking good, CM. Isn't it different on the beach digging compared to our dirt? Talk about a easy task, only if we could find something super nice like rings & such.

;) RR
