Hey guys, I came across this jacket, which is being advertised as a Mexican Military jacket from the 19th century. I would appreciate any insight anyone might have, as it doesn't look like a military type jacket at first glance and I have never seen anything like it before. It also has no maker and/or national markings on it which makes it harder to identify. Thanks

Looks more like a marching band jacket to be but I could be wrong.

I found a similar one (green with gold & red collar flash) as a 19th century French Hussar jacket. But only similar. But in the 19th century EVERY country's military copied the French (It's true!)

Mexico seems to have favored blue. :dontknow:

ask the seller if there are backmarks on the buttons, that would help date it.... I don't know what it is, but band uniform or military school cadet are possibilities.

Great post RJ and welcome to TNet! It's certainly in remarkable shape and with the lined sleeves it screams "well made"

Thanks for your post Charlie, great info.

looks like something Michael Jackson might have worn. Did it come with one glove?

That would not be a very intimidating military uniform

As Charlie said, it does appear to be some version of a Napoleonic era Hussar jacket.

But the condition is remarkable... or more like unbelievable in the pictures. I see lots of hand stitching in the finish but it still makes me wonder if it is a reproduction. Possibly an older reproduction but not 200+ years old to my eye.

As NOLA_Ken suggests, get the back-mark off a few of the buttons. That will help tell the story.

Unless it can properly identified, it won't command much of a price. A lot of times buttons tell the tale. Check for backmarks.
