So, My mother told me, “Jared, here are some coins for you to look at. I found them in my jacket.”

One of the coins was a 1997 P Quarter. Attached is a picture of the obverse and reverse.

When I looked at it under a magnifier under a low light setting, I discovered TWO weird things.

Look at the bottom of the F in OF. See that line going out? It’s casting a Faint shadow under low light settings. I think that is cud or post mint damage. You can actually see it faintly with the naked eye.

That’s not what I am posting about, though I would like input on this as well.

Here is what I think is a small die crack.

As you can see, it goes from the wing behind the D in UNITED slightly, then it goes behind the S in STATES, comes out, goes behind the S again, then goes out to the rim.

If that was post mint damage, it would show on top of the S also. However, it’s not. It’s going BEHIND the S, so I think it’s a minting error of some kind.

What do you guys think?

Jared

Generally speaking, if the "crack" you see is raised, it was from a defective die. If the "crack" is an actual crevice in the coin, it could be a defective planchet, or just a post mint scratch or damage.
