{Monday} was an interesting day.....As an earned yearly right of passage, after 30 years working in Education, I do something on the first day of school to contrast where I am to where I would have been .... Coincidely, last Friday was the last day for the city's municipal pool to be open, and because of pranksters with 20 pounds of laundry powder, and the liability of accidental drowings, they began draining the pool the following work day.

Monday, I spent the first day of school at Cherry park, and with a stroke of luck, within an hour of being there, I was inside the fenced area and metal detecting in the grassy sunbathing area.... The Parks Dept. Supervisor was there to open the drain....I introduced myself, told him where I'd retired from, and added, "What I'll do is pull-out all the sharp metal pieces I find to help keep the grass areas safer." He smiled, nodded his head, and said, "Okay, you can just lock the gate back when you leave."

Oddly, no silver or gold jewelry, but I recovered three costume jewelry items and that made me wonder...... The 12 ft. high chain link fence enclosing the pool has a metal tubing rail at the top. The longer I stayed, the more two things seemed to be why no Precious Metals jewelry were found....In two places, the high top rail was pulled loose, so I'm guessing that during the swim season nights, somebody made it over with a detector and hit the high spots for precious metals.... or...kids and young adults aren't wearing expensive jewelry to sunbath any more.....

On the left side of the picture is the lot of coins I dug Monday morning using an 8" diameter detecting coil. After taking a brief break for a quick trip to the closest fast food place, the right side is what I dug Monday afternoon...I changed to an even smaller 5" coil...because of so much junk left the swimmers and sunbathers.... That small of a coil makes you slow down because of the small area it covers, as well as seeing around the other ferrous metal, hence finding 50 dimes that afternoon....

After leaving a large pile of shredded aluminum can pieces, pop-tops hit by the mower blades, aluminum wire ties from the chainlink fence..even a few pieces of clear and brown glass, and other pieces of sharp objects on top of a several trash containers in the pool area, I'd recovered 198 coins that totals $25.18 ...

I'll put that toward future garage sale gold and silver jewelry for my solar project... ;>)

198 coins in 2 days? That's killer, man.

Not two days. One day, from 10 a.m. until 5:30 p.m., in 104* temps with dry, dry soil...

But, what a chance to find lost coins!!

When I first saw this..I said....He must have been in a swimming pool...and sure enough...you were..

I got permission to hit some pools in my area..and i couldnt believe the amount of targets i was getting...i was bringing in an average of 15 bucks everytime i went...and after the change was gone..i started hunting for gold...and did VERY well...you should try and go back and only hunt those targets...I was at 2 different pools in 2 different areas, and found 6 gold rings at one place, and 5 at the other..its out there

Great Haul!!
