Looks like silver, not even a hint of copper showing.
Sounds like a 40% on a glass table.
Haven't weighed it yet.

Best I can tell there were never any silver 1974 minted 40% or 90%

Not my pictures but looks identical to what's posted about half-way down 1974P 90% Silver Kennedy Half Dollar - Page 3
This thread is actually identical to what I found.

I assume it's not silver but don't buy the plated theory. Anyone else run into these?

Thanks

Use the tissue test, take a tissue, put a 40%, the 1974 half you have, and a clad half, and compare the results by color. If it is actually a silver half, it would look like the 40%.

I found a 1971 S that also had a silver rim. I used the tissue test like Sag mentioned. The coin showed up dark next to a light 40% and 90% half that were also under the 1 sheet of the two-ply tissue that I used.

Their are lots of clad coins where the nickle is 99% of the rim, ie, no noticeable sandwich.

Do the tissue Test.

Weigh the coin.

Take a photo, include other like coins - a lot of people can see silver from a photo.

Rare coins are RARE.

You probably have a magicians coin. Weigh it, and look for a place along the edge that could pop it open.

I have a 1969 Quarter that appears to be silver. The rim is even nicked as if to show the coin is not coated with silver or paint what have you. However I took a file and scratched the edge an low and behold there was copper under neither that silver exterior. It appeared to have been plated by someone with silver.

Take a file and scratch the edge I bet you find copper just lurking below the surface.

plated. I'd bet heavy on it if i were a betting man. :-)

Thanks for the responses guys.

Any point in keeping this thing?

Why would anyone bother plating a coin?
