1965 proof nickels?

I found a crazy-shiny nickel today out of a vending machine, and it's either a proof or just a fantastically brilliant business strike.

Did the US Mint make any proof nickels dated 1965? Are they marked in any way to indicate so?

No proofs were made from 1965 to 1967. Special Mint sets were made instead of proof sets for those three years.

Is there a definitive way to tell if I have one of those?

I really don't know if there is any way to tell for sure. The value would really be very minimal so it wouln't be worth it to go to much effort to have it checked. I would just put it in a coin case to protect it, and keep it.

There is no way to tell. As I recall the Special Mint Sets were just examples of the regular coinage for that year. Most likely what you have is something that has been buffed or coated. any chance of a picture?
