Hi Guys,

I'm posting this for a friend. This 1964D Nickle (center in both pics) was found in change. Its about as thick as a dime, and is lacking the raised ridge. If post-mint modification was done, it isn't apparent even with a magnifying glass.

I know the pics aren't that great, but does anyone have any idea if this is a known error? Any guesses on ballpark value? Thanks for helping me to help a buddy.

Could have been struck on dime stock. Look for the copper on the edge. It also could have been struck on metal stock for another countries coinage. The US has minted coins for countries around the world due the high cost of minting machines for small countries.

Just one possibility:

I’ve had some ‘funny’ sized real looking coins from a magic shop.

The off size coins would ‘stack’ under a hollow larger blank coin concealing them. The magician would move his hands around, hocus pocus, and coins would appear or disappear. The palm was just sticky enough to ‘lift’ the blank, or master, coin to hiding or reveal the others.

It would be a 1964 dime so it would be sliver and not have a copper center.

Great pics! It certainly LOOKS real from what I can see. Perhaps a quick trip to a coin dealer may solve the question.
Best o' luck

If it was struck on a dime blank, it would be thinner than a dime. A dime blank wouldn't have enough metal to be as thick as a dime AND have the diameter of a nickel.

Get the weight... and/or do a specific gravity test on it.. it has the signs of having been struck on a dime.. thickness.. weak strike.. and, like someone pointed out.. '64 would be silver! I collected errors for years.. had a cent struck on a dime.. quarter on a nickel.. I don't think I paid over $25 for either FYI..

Thanks to everyone for your replies.

I am starting to lean toward the chance that it was struck on a foreign coin blank. RCUYA, you're right on the money with your comment. If it was struck on a silver dime blank, it could not be as thick as a dime and as large in dia as a nickle.

I don't know of any other US blanks or planchettes that it could be stamped on. Anyone?

I will try to do a specific gravity test, but with such a small amount of material I suspect I'll have trouble.

Will try to get over to my buddy's house this week to take a diameter and thickness measurement. Don't have a scale sensitive enough to weigh it.
